A five-year-old boy struck by a vehicle in the 16100 block of 92 ave is transported to a waiting helicopter.

A woman has been arrested in relation to a tragic hit-and-run Friday that left a young boy with serious head injuries in hospital.

Police say a 26-year-old woman from Surrey has turned herself in after several attempts to secure an arrest by the Surrey RCMP.

On Friday at about 2:55 p.m., a five-year-old boy was crossing the street at 161 Street and 92 Avenue when he was struck by a car.

The vehicle then fled, leaving the child unconscious by the side of the road.

Police were looking for a grey 2005 Mercedes, four door, with tinted windows and large stock rims.

It had been last seen speeding eastbound on 92 Avenue.

"Right now, this is the only vehicle our entire police force is looking for," Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet said on Friday.

Following tips received by the public, a suspect vehicle was located in the driveway of a residence several blocks from the accident. The suspect vehicle, a four-door 2005 grey Mercedes was seized and will undergo extensive mechanical and forensic inspection.

The boy who was hit is reportedly improving, but is still unable to open his eyes or speak.

Paquet urges drivers to slow down and watch their driving, particularly around school hours.

"There's kids everywhere, especially three to five o'clock," Paquet said. "Lots of traffic, everyone is in a hurry, take your time, look everywhere, and just slow down and be aware."

Police are baffled as to why someone would leave an injured person, especially a young child, unconscious by the side of the road

"We see people make wrong decisions every day," Paquet said. "But this crosses the line. How do you not stop and do the right thing?"

Charges against the driver of the Mercedes are expected but have not yet been submitted to Crown counsel.
