BC Hydro has cancelled the flood alert for the South Alouette River.

The City of Maple Ridge made the announcement late Thursday after a re-assessment by Hydro of the water conditions. On Wednesday, BC Hydro began a controlled release from the Alouette Lake reservoir into the South Alouette River in order to reduce lake levels that risen in the last four days as a result of heavy rains.

It issued the alert at that time warning residents of possible flooding downstream.

Releasing water is a common procedure used to regulate lake levels during the rainy season.

“The river will continue to run at a high rate from the controlled release and the additional rainfall that is forecast throughout the weekend,” the city said.

Nevertheless, people are being advised to be careful along the trails and dikes near the river.

Any future updates will be published on Maple Ridge’s website at mapleridge.ca and facebook.com/yourmapleridge.

The City of Maple Ridge has created a new alert notification as part of the ‘Notify Me’ system titled “Alouette River Urgent Alerts” that can beconfigure to send e-mail or text notifications. To active this alert just go to the ‘Notify Me’ link at mapleridge.ca and create the account.
