Surrey firefighters rescued Austin the pit bull from the bottom of a 15-metre drainage shaft on Monday afternoon.

Surrey firefighters came to the rescue Monday afternoon after a dog – a pit bull named Austin – fell 15 metres down a drainage shaft  near the Pattullo Bridge on Timberland Road.

The shaft is used in the dredging of sand from the Fraser River.

Austin's rescue took more than an hour and involved the Surrey Fire Department's 12-member high-angle rescue team.

Firefighters sent a man down into the hole, put Austin in a harness, and hauled him out.

Austin was not injured in the incident.
