The City of Surrey and City of Delta are working together to spiff up 96 Avenue between 116 Street and Scott Road, with North Delta on the south side and Royal Heights to the north.

"We're both looking at adding cycling facilities, pedestrian facilities, etcetera, to connect with the rapid bus on Scott Road," Surrey's general manager of engineering Scott Neuman told Surrey council.

"So the City was always going to fund their portion of the work and then in discussions with Delta we've decided to do a joint project. The City will deliver the full project but all the works on the south side in Delta will be funded solely by Delta."

Neuman described the City of Surrey's role as being "just the delivery agent so it's one contractor, so it's cheaper for both municipalities."

Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke remarked that "it's great that we're working with our neighbours like that."

Surrey council approved the recommendations in Neuman's related corporate report, which indicates the coordinated work "will include improvements along both sides of 96 Avenue between 116 Street and 120 Street consisting of one travel lane in each direction, on-street parking in certain locations, cycling and pedestrian facilities, and utility work."

An invitation for tender will be posted on BC Bid and Surrey city staff will present council with a corporate report for the construction contract award this Spring.

"Subject to council approval, construction is expected to start in Spring 2025 and be completed by Spring 2026," Neuman added.
