The residents of ‘tent city’ down in Whalley are faced with the daunting task of staying warm through the cruel winter months.
Blankets are always needed to keep the residents warm down on the notorious 135A Street. Pop Up Soup Kitchen founder Erin Schulte recently asked the public for donations down in the area in a telling video.

On Tuesday, her calls to action were heard.
A donor who wished to remain anonymous donated ‘hundreds’ of blankets to be handed out along the Whalley strip. Schulte and other volunteers spent Tuesday evening handing out blankets to residents all across the strip.
It’s not the first time that the donor has helped people living in the area.
“He is just amazing,” said Schulte through messages with the Now-Leader. “He’s put close to 1000 blankets on that street over the last couple of years.”
Schulte said that the donor wishes to remain anonymous. He would only say that he’s an owner of a textile company in Richmond that imports fabrics from California.
“He says he does it just to help my cause,” Schulte said. “He doesn’t do it for the recognition.”
Schulte also mentions that large-scale donations from the anonymous donor equal more than the rest of the donations from Surrey combined.
Although the generous donation will aid the people living out in the cold, there’s always a need for more items in the area. Estimates from the city suggest that approximately 450 homeless people are living in the area.
