The city wants to hear from North Delta residents where they think transportation improvements are needed in the community.
On Friday (Feb. 14), the City of Delta unveiled an interactive map at letstalk.delta.ca/northdeltatransportation where residents can pinpoint exact locations in need of attention — places with missing sidewalks, heavy congestion, a need for cycling infrastructure, or other transportation challenges. Input will be collected through to Friday, Feb. 28.
The initiative is part of a comprehensive transportation study of North Delta designed to identify current and future transportation needs and accommodate the community’s continued growth, according to a city press release.
The study, which launched this month, will include developing a 10-year road network and identifying opportunities to expand transportation infrastructure, particularly in areas zoned for increased density in the city's new Official Community Plan.
The scope of the transportation study will focus on five key areas: identifying opportunities to improve existing intersections and roadways to relieve traffic congestion, recommending best practices regarding on-street parking, exploring where new transit routes and bus stops will be needed to service population growth, assessing ways to build new road connections that expand vehicle capacity, and promoting active transportation (walking, biking, etc.) through new road connections.
“As Delta continues to experience growth, it’s vital that our transportation networks keep pace, meeting the needs of residents and maintaining the connectivity of our community,” Mayor George Harvie said in a press release.
“This study will help us identify key areas for improvement — whether it’s reducing congestion, improving bus shelters or making it easier for people to walk, bike and take transit. We want to hear directly from North Delta residents about where they see opportunities for improvement, and make the investments needed to ensure our community’s future success.”
Residents interested in speaking directly to council members or city staff about transportation needs in North Delta are encouraged to drop by either of two "council open houses" planned for next month: the first on Monday, March 3, in the gymnasium at the North Delta Recreation Centre, the second a week later on Monday, March 10 in the foyer of city hall. Both events will take place from 4:30 to 6 p.m.
Upon completion of the study, the data gathered will inform the development of neighbourhood servicing plans, long-term strategies for infrastructure like water, sewer and stormwater services for key growth areas across the city.
Work on neighbourhood servicing plans is scheduled to take place in April and June of this year. Draft plans will be reviewed with the community prior to being adopted.
