Anne Longakit, 19, (left) has been crowned Miss Teenage Surrey 2016.
On the weekend of April 2-3, Longakit competed at the Miss Teenage British Columbia – a provincial pageant held at the Executive Airport Plaza & Conference Centre in Richmond – with 21 other girls ages 13-19, representing different regions of the province.
Born in the Philippines, Longakit and her family immigrated to Canada in 2003.
As an only child, Longakit’s parents encouraged her to become a well-rounded individual, starting dance at the age of four, and playing the violin and piano during elementary school.
Throughout high school, she had a bustling schedule dancing both recreationally and competitively.
In Grade 8, Longakit tried out for Clayton Heights Secondary’s volleyball team, a choice that ignited a passion for the sport, which lasted throughout her high school years.
Longakit was also actively involved in the student leadership clubs at her school. In the spring of 2014, Longakit travelled to Ecuador on a Me to We trip with Project Equal where they helped build a school and participated in leadership workshops.
Despite her busy life, Longakit’s love for learning allowed her to excel academically. She received honour roll status from Grades 8–12 and earned the Governor General’s Bronze Medal for graduating with the highest average in her class.
Longakit is currently a second year biology major at the University of British Columbia.
She continues to give back to her community by volunteering at Vancouver General Hospital, coaching Grades 6 and 7 girls’ volleyball, and volunteering at Pinamalayan Community Hospital in the Philippines in 2015.
Longakit was selected as one of the top 12 finalists to compete for the title of Miss Teenage Canada 2016 and $20,000 in cash and prizes at the nationals held in Toronto this July.
