The Major Allstars of Whalley Little League are a win away from a national baseball championship and a trip to Williamsport.
As B.C. reps, the team of 12-year-olds won 5-0 in a semifinal game Wednesday (Aug. 7) against Team Ontario at Cricket Field in Kingston, where the Canadian Little League Championships are being played.
Now Whalley will face Team Alberta in Thursday's final, 9 a.m. start Surrey time.
The winner moves on to represent Canada at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, starting Aug. 14.
Whalley finished second in the round-robin part of the tournament with a record of five wins and one loss, a 2-0 tourney-opening setback against a tough Team Alberta. So far, the Stephen Young-managed Surrey team has scored 54 runs and allowed 10 in seven games, including Wednesday's semifinal.
At the provincial championship in Victoria late last month, Whalley beat six teams for the right to rep B.C. at the national tournament.
The roster includes Xavier Cabalfin, Ronan Bobiles, Ben Wegwitz, Eric Popovich, Blake Anderson, Marek Kluth, Kayden Krestanovich, Jozef Young, Joshua Hernstedt, Riley Suvilai, Ray Dhasi and Rye Precioso. Coaches are Young along with Eric Kluth and Jason Wegwitz.
