A fundraising carnival is coming to Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School.
Called the “Tweedy Carnival for Change,” the event is being put on by the student council with the support of Rick Kumar, a social studies teacher at the school.
The student council is inviting other students, parents, family members, and the wider community to come out and support the carnival, with all money raised going to support B.C. Children’s Hospital.
“Our goal is not only to raise funds for the B.C. Children’s Hospital, but also to foster a sense of community and engagement among our students,” Kumar said. “At Panorama Ridge, we saw how a small idea could snowball into a significant event that brought joy and support to those in need.”
Kumar hopes to repeat that model at Panorama with the Tweedy carnival to make an even greater impact.
Carnival for Change will have a bunch of student-run activities. There will be various booths and games for carnival-goers with many different chances to win prizes. There will also be different types of food available for purchase.
“We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to support B.C. Children’s Hospital,” said Tanvi Dhami, student council president. “Our peers have worked incredibly hard to organize this event, and we’re excited to see the community come together to make a difference.”
The student council’s goal is to raise funds for the hospital, but also to raise awareness about the important work B.C. Children’s does.
The carnival dovetails into what some of the kids are studying in Kumar’s socials class, as they are learning about social responsibility and community activism.
Kumar’s quest to teach kids about helping in their communities won him the award for Surrey Teacher of the Year in 2023-2024.
He added Christy Smith, a teacher at Tweedy, deserves a lot of credit too. He said Smith puts in “extremely long hours” in helping out.
“Lord Tweedsmuir is made better because of educators like her and students like these.”
The carnival is set for Friday, June 14 at Tweedy. The event will kick off after school at 2:30 p.m. in the school’s cafeteria. All funds raised will go to B.C. Children’s Hospital. Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School is located at 6151 180th Street in Cloverdale.
