Surrey's fall tree-planting season kicks off Saturday (Sept. 28) with a National Tree Day celebration at Hawthorne Rotary Park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The city's Releaf program aims to involve residents in the care and maintenance of parks and urban forest. Since 1991, volunteers have planted thousands of trees and shrubs, "improving air quality, increasing shade, supporting wildlife and boosting biodiversity in local parks," according to a news release from city hall.

More than 500 native trees and shrubs will be planted at Saturday's event, open to everyone. No experience is required, and gloves, tools and guidance will be provided. Participants are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes and dress for the weather, as the event will go ahead rain or shine but may be cancelled if there are strong winds or severe weather.

Through October, Releaf program events are held Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon at various parks including Clayton (Oct. 5), Robertson Drive (Oct. 12), Latimer (Oct. 19) and Sullivan (Oct. 26).

"“By volunteering," Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke says, "you’re not only contributing to a healthier environment but also helping to foster a sense of community and shared responsibility for our natural resources. I encourage everyone to come out, get involved and make a positive impact.”
