Author and teacher Ben Nuttall-Smith has been recognized for his literary and academic achievements.

At the 19th annual Surrey Writers' Conference, Nuttall-Smith received the Special Achievement Award, presented by the Surrey Board of Trade.

Nuttall-Smith taught music, theatre, art and language until he retired in 1991 from the Delta School District.

He served on the Canadian Authors' Association, represented the Fraser Valley on the Federation of B.C. Writers, has volunteered for the Surrey International Writers' Conference, and has led workshops, among other noteworthy accomplishments.

He's written two novels (the second is due this January), along with three books of poetry, and a children's book.

The award, sponsored by the board of trade for 19 years, honours writers who've made a significant achievement in their writing careers during the past year.
