White Rock's Spirit of the Sea just a short trip south

Cloverdale's Blueberry Festival runs this August long, as does White Rock's near and annual Spirit of the Sea Festival.

In Cloverdale, we've had our Rodeo and we still have our Blueberry Fest (August 4, if you didn't know), but things are heating up in White Rock, where the Augusts are always busy and the beach is (mostly) packed.

This year's Spirit of the Sea Festival will feature a delicatessen of homegrown talent, headlined by Champagne Republic and the Star Captains.

White Rock-raised Sea Festival co-ordinator Jim Black said the August long weekend will bring with it a wealth of musical talent, which can be sampled on three stages: the Spirit Stage at Semiahmoo Park, the East Stage at East Beach, and the West Stage at West Beach.

"We're trying to get away from the idea of a main stage," Black told the Peace Arch News. "They're all great stages.

"In the past, people have brought in big artists, but there are so many people in town, so much talent around town."

The 2012 Spirit of the Sea Festival kicks off at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 3, with a White Rock Youth Ambassadors Gala, and runs until Monday evening. The festival concludes with a Semiahmoo First Nation Salmon Bake and music shows on the Spirit Stage – finished off by Black's band, the Star Captains.
