The Surrey Youth Theatre Company presents A Little Princess, a beloved children’s classic, at the Surrey Arts Centre this weekend.

The play, based on a novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, tells the story of Sara Crewe, a soldier’s daughter who’s brought to a boarding school in Victorian London, where she endures a series of hardships – from her father’s death and mistreatment by a cruel headmistress, to poverty and servitude.

Despite her trials, Sara never loses her sense of dignity, warmth, or imagination, qualities that endear her to friends, and serve her well on her difficult, but ultimately uplifting journey.

In real life, author Frances Hodgson Burnett, who also wrote The Secret Garden, wrote to support her younger siblings after her parents died.

The show is directed by Susan Pendleton and stars members of the Surrey Youth Theatre Company, or SYTCO, is comprised of talented young performers aged nine to 16 from across Surrey and White Rock.

The company is marking its 15th season. Previous productions include A Year With Frog and Toad, Madeline’s Christmas, Seussical, Honk!, Pippi Longstocking, The Prince and the Pauper and High School Musical.

A Little Princess is presented Friday, March 2 and Saturday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, March 4 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $16.75 and available by calling 604-501-5566 or visiting https://tickets.surrey.ca.
