A new community treasures exhibit is coming to the Museum of Surrey.
“Celebrating Our Ugandan Heritage” will open at the end of January and run until the end of April.
According to a post on the museum’s web page, the community treasures exhibit will offer museum-goers insights into Uganda and Ugandan culture.
“Step into a world of vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and rich traditions,” the post promises visitors. “This immersive experience invites visitors to explore Uganda—a land of breathtaking beauty and deep cultural roots.”
The new exhibition will allow visitors to peruse a private collection belonging to a Surrey family. The collection includes Ugandan artifacts, cultural clothing, and traditional beaded jewellery.
“Each piece tells a story of heritage, craftsmanship, and pride, offering a unique glimpse into the cultural richness of Uganda.”
The community treasures exhibit also offers a visual trek through Uganda with “captivating displays” of Ugandan landscapes, unique wildlife and famous cultural landmarks.
The exhibition will also have an auditory angle. Visitors will get to “immerse” themselves in traditional Ugandan music that will cascade over the museum hall as museum-goers get to know “the Pearl of Africa.”
Community Treasures exhibitions are shows brought to the museum through public outreach and engagement. According to the Museum of Surrey, “Community Treasures celebrates the stories of Surrey’s people.”
“Celebrating Our Ugandan Heritage” runs from Jan. 28 to April 27 at the Museum of Surrey, 17710 56A Avenue. Entrance is free. To find out more info, contact the museum at 604-592-6956, or via museum@surrey.ca, or visit surrey.ca.
