Delta’s parks, recreation and culture department is hosting a slew of free activities for residents this Family Day.
The city is offering sports, crafts and more at sites across Delta this Monday, Feb. 17; full event details and registration (where applicable) is available at cityofdelta.perfectmind.com.
Topping the list of fun activities is an all-ages-friendly “Family Day Amazing Race,” happening from 10 a.m. to noon at both North Delta Recreation Centre and South Delta Recreation Centre.
"Do you think you are the wittiest and fastest family in your community? Come ready to compete in a fun and engaging race around your local recreation centre!” says the event description.
From 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Sungod Recreation Centre is hosting “Family Day Multisport,” a chance for visitors to try a variety of sports including basketball, pickleball and badminton under the direction of parks and rec staff.
Speaking of badminton, families can also learn introductory skills and drills before playing some games at North Delta Rec Centre from 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. and at South Delta Recreation Centre from 1 to 3:15 p.m.
Families can practice their hockey skills, then play a game of shinny during Family Day “stick-and-puck,” available at Sungod from noon to 1:15 p.m. and again at South Delta Rec from 3 to 4 p.m. CSA-approved multi-impact helmets with half (ages 19+) or full cages are required. Wooden sticks are permitted, with plastic/foam pucks only.
For those more interested in arts and crafts, the city is offering collaborative peg doll-making sessions at North Delta and South Delta rec centres from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. (recommended for ages 5-8).
"There is something so special about making personalized crafts, especially when they honour your family and pets,” reads the event description.
“Come celebrate Family Day by making and customizing your very own personalized family of painted peg people and pets. Have fun adding character to each face, embellishing your family's wardrobe and creating your family pet.”
Later, both centres will be hosting collaborative family comic strip-making sessions from 2 to 3:15 p.m., where participants will learn how to draw comic strips in seven easy steps.
“It’s easier than you think; most kids are natural storytellers. They love to tell stories from their own lives,” reads the event description. “Together, you can create imaginary worlds populated by quirky characters that do amazing things.”
Over at the Douglas J. Husband Discovery Centre, the city is offering an afternoon of fun from noon to 3 p.m., including an interactive story time, family tree and museum gallery-based activities and more.
“Take this time to learn not only about Delta's history, but your own.”
Parent participation is required for children under the age of 7.
While not free, the city is also offering learn to skate sessions at North Delta rec (9:30 to 11 a.m.), South Delta rec (1:15 to 2:45 p.m.) and Sungod (1:30 to 3 p.m.). The sessions are walk-in only (no pre-registration available), and CSA-approved multiple impact helmets are required for ages 13 and younger.
For Delta residents, admission is $5.75 for adults, $4.50 for seniors ages 60-74, and free for children, youth and seniors 75 and older.
