Worth celebrating

The Surrey Museum hosts its annual Asian Heritage Day event this Saturday from 1-4 p.m.

Explore and celebrate the rich heritage of Asian culture through music, dance, film and more this Saturday at the Surrey Museum.

Several local organizations will also be on hand with informative displays at the Asian Heritage Day event, running from 1-4 p.m. May 4.

Special guests such as acupuncturist and Chinese medicine practitioner Mike Lang will offer visitors insight into well-being with a health and vitality station, where he’ll give hands-on demonstrations of using pressure points to activate the body’s natural healing process.

At 2 p.m., Dr. Michael C. Howard, a professor of international studies at SFU, presents a half-hour talk on the textile heritage of southeast Asia. His presentation will cover the materials used in making clothing, weaving and decorative techniques, and styles of dress.

Dance performances run from 3-4 p.m. Performers include the Sudnya Dance Academy, presenting classical dances of India, and the Academy of Martial Arts will show off their skills with a martial arts demonstration.

Tina, a local youth, will perform a musical solo on the guzheng, a traditional Chinese instrument. The Southeast Asian Cultural Heritage Society will also perform.

– The Surrey Museum is located at 17710 56A Avenue, in Surrey. It’s open Tuesdays to Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission sponsored by Friends of the Surrey Museum Society.
