Teen volunteers are needed this fall for a program at the Cloverdale Library that helps young readers.
The Coast Capital Reading Buddies program helps younger elementary school children improve their reading skills by pairing them up with a high school student.
The little buddies – children in Grades 2 to 4 – practice reading in a safe, non-threatening environment, building their confidence through weekly sessions at the library.
To qualify as a reading buddy volunteer, you must be fluent in English, enjoy working with children, have an interest and enthusiasm for books and reading, be 14 to 18 years old, and able to make a seven-week commitment to the program.
Application forms for interested volunteers and little buddies are available online at surreylibraries.ca.
The fall 2012 session runs Mondays from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. from Oct. 29 to Dec. 10.
Please note: the program is not designed to teach children how to read.
It’s free to participate, but space is limited. Parents, you’ll need to apply on behalf of your child.
