The Surrey resident called her husband, who was at work, 18 times to tell him the news.

Elvie Batister was shocked to learn she had won $500,000 in the Aug. 21 Lotto 6/49 draw.

Batister scanned her ticket at a self-scanner at Shoppers Drug Mart when she saw she had won an Extra prize from the 6/49 draw.

“I was so shocked. I was shaking,” she said.

The Surrey resident called her husband, who was at work, 18 times to tell him the news.

She plans to have a "celebratory lunch" with her family and put the rest of the money into savings.

"Being able to help my family is all I want,” she said.

Batister purchased the winning ticket at Save-On-Foods (13630 George Jct.) in King George Hub in Whalley.

So far in 2024, B.C. lottery players redeemed more than $123 million in winnings from Lotto 6/49 and more than $35 million in winnings from the Extra prizes.  The Extra is available with Daily Grand, Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max, and BC/49.
