Stewart Farm, Surrey's historic pioneer farmhouse, provides the perfect setting this Saturday for an old-time harvest fair, complete with potato sack races and apple cider.
Modeled on the tradition of Surrey's first Fall Fair, held in 1888, the Historic Stewart Farm's Olde Harvest Fair runs from noon to 3 p.m. Sept. 21.
Activities include tours of the heritage orchard with fruit tree expert Richard Hallman, and learn about historic apples. Master gardener Roger Phillips will share info on mason bees and the rare heritage vegetables and herbs growing in the farm's heirloom gardens.
There will be music by Central Fraser Valley Fiddlers, along with traditional harvest festival games and activities, from potato sack races and a Scarecrow relay to corn-husking competitions for prizes.
Try harvest crafts like vegetable stamping, and listen to story time with Leslee from the Ocean Park Library, or have your face painted.
There will be cider press and butter making demonstrations, along with tasting samples of applesauce cooked on the wood burning stove, popcorn, and more.
The fair includes a vendors market with local vendors and businesses, plus live heritage breed chickens from True North Heritage Hatchery. Visitors may also tour the feature exhibit, Nobody Here But Us Chickens, which delves into chicken history and how to raise your own poultry.

The Historic Stewart Farm is located at 13723 Crescent Road in South Surrey. Regular site hours are Tuesday to Friday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturdays, 12 to 4 p.m.
