Registration is underway for Elgin Park Secondary’s 17th Community Christmas Dinner.
Set for Wednesday, Dec. 6, the dinner is an effort of students and staff at the 13484 24 Ave. school that aims to brighten the holidays for those who might not otherwise have the opportunity to enjoy a festive dinner.
It’s an undertaking that has become a much-anticipated staple of the school’s holiday season.
“We try and get as many classes and kids involved as possible,” sponsor teacher Sinéad Hibbert said Friday (Nov. 17).
“They’re always coming by and asking, ‘When is it? Can I help?’ They really look forward to it.”

Younger students help prepare for the event, while those in Grades 10 to 12 serve dinner and chat with guests.
Entertainment – also provided by students – is “always new and different,” Hibbert added.
On the night of the dinner, doors open at 5 p.m., and dinner is served at 5:30 p.m. Dessert follows, and entertainment continues through till 7:30 p.m.
Transportation is not provided, Hibbert noted.
Seating capacity for the dinner is 150; a wait list will be kept after the spaces fill up. The deadline to reserve (by calling the school at 604-538-6678) is Nov. 29.
Hibbert asked anyone who reserves but later realizes they won’t be able to make it, to please call and let the school know so that the seat – or seats – can be offered to someone on the waiting list.
