SFU hockey to host second annual ‘underwear toss’ night

The team is collecting clean socks and underwear for Surrey Urban Mission

SURREY — Time to get your undies out of a bunch and onto the ice.

As long as they’re clean, that is.

Simon Fraser University men’s hockey team is hosting their second annual ‘underwear toss night,’ with proceeds going to the Surrey Urban Mission and Pacific Community Resource Centre.

The hockey team is encouraging people to bring brand new, packaged underwear and socks to the game. Suffice to say that used underwear and socks will not be accepted for donation.

This the first year that SFU hockey is sticking strictly to the undergarments.

Last year, their first annual underwear tossed was combined with the teddy bear toss. SFU men’s ice hockey communications director Andrew Delbaere is hoping for more underwear donations with a tighter fit, errr, focus.

“Every other pro team is doing the teddy bear toss,” said Delbaere. “We wanted to find something to make it a little different.”

Former SFU ice hockey player Tim Baillie runs an annual campaign called ‘Toque Tuesday,’ which also collects money and clothing items for the Pacific Community Resource centre. He suggested to Delbaere that one thing the organization struggles to collect is clean socks and underwear.

SFU hopes to increase those donations this year with the elimination of the Teddy Bear toss.

For those who feel the need to donate more than just underwear, clothing donations boxes for Covenant House will be set up throughout the rink.

SFU goalie Lyndon Stanwood is spearheading the team’s involvement with convenant house, setting up a Friday night of giving back and watching hockey out in Burnaby.

The ‘underwear toss’ game will take place at the Bill Copeland Centre against Vancouver Island University on Friday, Nov. 24th at 7 p.m.
