Cloverdale's newest library is open.

Located in Provinceton Park at 180 Street and 70 Avenue, the little free library is one of several in Surrey, and is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Cloverdale.

Resident Shahee Lakhani says the library works on the honour system – readers of all ages in the bustling residential neighbourhood are welcome to browse the titles, take home a book they like, and add to the collection.

She hopes the library will see a lot of foot traffic because of all the young families in the neighbourhood.

Lakhani and other are residents will be looking after the library, ensuring the books are rotated.

Little free libraries originated in the United States, where Todd Bol built a model of a one-room schoolhouse in honour of his mother, a teacher. He filled it with books and hoisted it up on a post in his front yard.

The idea has spread from there.

The Surrey Library has donated the first set of books.

It was completed last month over spring break, and officially launched March 19.
