A roundabout is going in at Harvie Road and 88th Avenue.
The current angled four-way stop sits just north of the Port Kells Community Hall. The intersection is right at the site of the former Ace Building Centre, which was destroyed in a massive fire in 2020.
Surrey City Council voted to approve Corporate Report R218 at its regular council meeting Nov. 4. The report, from the Engineering Department, recommended council award a more than $2 million contract to put in the roundabout.
The Engineering Department recommended council award Contract No.1720-005-31 to 1481724 B.C. Ltd. in the amount of $2,078,728 (including GST) for the Harvie Road and 88th Avenue roundabout and that council set the expenditure authorization limit for the contract at $2,286,000 (including contingencies and GST).
Scott Neuman, engineering dept. GM, penned the report. He noted the roundabout will bring “safety improvements” to the busy intersection.
An engineering pre-bid estimate from McElhanney Ltd. set the cost to build the traffic circle at $2.32 million (including GST).
“The low bidder, 1481724 B.C. Ltd. (formerly known as GB Paving Ltd.) has provided a Consent of Surety for a Performance Bond and a Labour and Materials Bond, and agreed to complete the work within 80 working days, as stipulated in the contract,” Neuman wrote.
He added 1481724 B.C. Ltd. is in the middle of changing their company name.
“Past performance on similar work has been satisfactory.”
Neuman explained that the city wanted to “increase the interest” for the roundabout work and as such offered a flexible starting date, up until the end of February. The work is to be completed by the summer of 2025.
The money for the project will come from the already approved 2024 Transportation Budget.
“The contract permits construction from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Friday,” Neuman added.
