A 17-foot high metal public art piece has been installed at the base of White Rock’s pier.
Coastal Cradle, by Alberta artist Andy Davies, is positioned just east of Memorial Park’s main staircase to the promenade. The art piece was installed this month.
According to a Memorial Park update on the city’s website Jan. 3, the base of the sculpture is sunk below grade to give the effect of the large-scale blades of grass growing up through the ground.
“Drawing on the delicate nature of the humblest of plants – the simple blade of grass. These blades, with a droplet of morning dew, evoke the precious and fragile stir of early morning. The suggestion of cradling leads the viewer to a place of tenderness, kindness, and the protection of something sacred. The flowing organic movement of the blades reference the undulating beach, waves, and tidal pools of White Rock. Nestled in these waves is the sun, shining with uplifting brilliance,” Davies said, according to the city’s website.
City of White Rock Coun. Christopher Trevelyan posted to Facebook Saturday, saying that “I can’t help but wonder if something unique or special to White Rock could have been built instead.”
“Please correct me, but to my eyes this sculpture could appear in any park or public space in any city anywhere in Canada.”
