Military records help trace family history

The Cloverdale Library hosts a family history program for people researching their family's military history.

Don’t take this the wrong way, but did your grandmother wear army boots?

Military records can be a rich source of information on family members who served in the military.

The Cloverdale Library – home to one of the most extensive collections of Canadian genealogical materials in Western Canada – is offering a family history program later this month for people who need help researching their family’s military history.

Knowing what to look for, where to find it, and how to understand it, isn’t always easy.

On Saturday, Sept. 29, the library presents Military Records with Colin Stevens, who has retired from the New Westminster Museum and Archives, and also served in the Canadian Forces Reserves. Stevens is a long-time researcher of military history and collector of military items.

The session runs from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The cost is $10.

Pre-registration required. Do so by visiting the library, at 5642 176 A Street, by calling 604-598-7328 or email familyhistory@surrey.ca.

For a general overview of the Cloverdale Library’s genealogy collection, visit one of the remaining orientation sessions planned for fall.

There are family history collection orientations on Oct. 13, Nov. 3, Dec. 1. They run from 10 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. Pre-registration is
recommended.
