Informal 'Coffee with a Cop' sessions with Surrey RCMP return Thursday

Even in a city as busy as Surrey, there's value in informal chats between locals and police

Surrey RCMP Insp. Ghalib Bhayan gets to know some Cloverdalians at a Coffee with a Cop session at Red Rooster Cafe last summer.

Surrey residents and business owners are invited to meet with local police and crime prevention staff and discuss neighbourhood issues in an informal setting as "Coffee with a Cop" returns over the next three weeks.

Starting this Thursday (March 24) in Guildford/Fleetwood and running weekly at each of the city's five policing districts to mid-April, Surrey RCMP host the first of a new series of Coffee with a Cop events at Cuatro Coffee at 9014 152 Street, from 10-11 a.m.

Coffee with a Cop is modeled on similar initiatives across North America.

The first Surrey RCMP series took place last summer, and earned positive reviews from the community.

"Even though Surrey is a busy city, we know the value of a good, old-fashioned face-to-face chat with locals," said Insp. Ghalib Bhayani, a community support and safety officer with the Surrey RCMP.

"People have great insight into what is happening in their neighbourhoods and events like this also help us build important relationships with residents and business owners."

Once again, he'll join local district staff for coffee and conversation with interested community members at each of the policing districts over the next three weeks.

Next up is South Surrey's Sunflower Cafe, 12310 Beecher Street, Thursday, March 31 from 10-11 a.m., followed by Cloverdale's Boothroyd Heritage Coffee at 16811 60 Avenue (from 10-11 a.m.) on April 1 with the Cloverdale/Port Kells District staff, City Centre's Waves Coffee House, 105 1777 University Drive on April 5 from 1-2 p.m., and wrapping up in Newton at the Espresso Cafe, 1112 7330 137 Street on April 13 from 10-11 a.m.

The events are drop in.
