If you’re looking for a way to help seniors, you may wish to make note of a food drive spearheaded by the Surrey RCMP this week.
The community is invited to help “Pack the Police Car,” a four-day food drive and fundraiser at various PriceSmart and Save-on-Foods in Cloverdale and Surrey, running Aug. 14 to 17.
Shoppers are encouraged to donate nutritious, non-perishable food items in support of the Surrey Food Bank’s new 65 plus Seniors Distribution Program.
Surrey RCMP members and a patrol car will be accepting food and cash donations to help families in need this summer.
Later this week they’re heading to Cloverdale and Clayton.
On Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., the cruiser will be at PriceSmart Foods at 17745 64 Avenue. Saturday, the appeal moves to PriceSmart Foods at 18710 Fraser Highway from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The top five food items currently in highest demand for the new program are: canned fish or meat, meals in tins, canned fruit and vegetables, whole grain rice or pasta, and pasta sauces.
The program provides a depot where seniors can collect food in a respectful, non-rushed, environment. Low-sodium and high-protein food choices will be available.
Every second Wednesday afternoon seniors living in Surrey and North Delta can avoid exhausting line-ups during a seniors-only distribution time.
Between 250 and 300 households use the Surrey Food Bank daily which translates into 11,000 people a month.
