Extra community-based shelters are open in Surrey and White Rock this weekend due to a rainfall warning.

The Homelessness Services Association of BC issued an alert Friday (Oct. 18) due to the atmospheric river hitting Metro Vancouver.

Environment Canada says the weather system will bring prolonged heavy rain to Metro Vancouver, the Sunshine Coast, Fraser Valley, Howe Sound, Whistler and Vancouver Island starting Friday.

The agency says strong winds with gusts up to 80 kilometres an hour will also develop on Saturday — the day thousands are expected to go to the polls across B.C. — in parts of Vancouver Island and Metro Vancouver.

The following community-based shelters in Surrey and White Rock will be active from Oct. 18 to 20, 2024.

  • Surrey Alliance Church: 13474 96th Avenue between 9:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. The site is accessible through the breezeway entrance in the rear parking lot. No pets.
  • South Surrey Recreation & Arts Centre EWR: 14601 20th Avenue between 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. The site is accessible near the lower parking lot. The site is pet-friendly and pet accessible.

Surrey Libraries keeps an up to date list of other shelters that are regularly open at surreylibraries.ca
