See Surrey through the eyes of an artist, explore the history embedded inside the walls of some of the city’s most fascinating historic buildings, or find out who the Fleetwood town centre’s namesake was by checking out the Surrey Archives’ spring lecture series.

The series, presented Saturdays from 11 a.m. to noon at the Surrey Archives, conveniently located in Cloverdale, kicks off this weekend with White Rock: Then & Now.

Join White Rock archivist and local historian Hugh Ellenwood April 13 to explore the changing landscape of this city by the sea, which retains an intimate connection to Surrey’s past.

What’s in a name? Discover the stories behind community, school and park names April 20 with Surrey’s Community Names.

Bricks, Mortar and Memories (May 4) will look at 10 different historic buildings in Surrey, from Mound Farm in Cloverdale to one-room schools like present-day Kensington Prairie Community Centre. The presentation will touch on the social and cultural contexts surrounding heritage buildings.

Artist Brian Croft presents Painting our History May 11. View images his spectacular historical paintings as well as learn more about his artistic process – and the extensive archival research – that goes into his work. His paintings portray historical scenes from across Vancouver and the Fraser Valley, as well as right here at home. In 2010, Croft donated his Painting, Cloverdale 1913 to the Surrey Archives.

Each session is $10, or register for all four for $35. Pre-register by calling 604-502-6459. The Surrey Archives is located at 17671 56 Avenue in the heart of Cloverdale. It’s open Tuesday to Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
