Killing them softly

Killing them softly: End of Life Documents are the Place to Start. Killing off your ancestors can give you the best launch in discovering the stories of their lives. Consider how the information compiled at the end of one's life can provide a summary, guiding your research deep into the past. Presented at the Cloverdale Library Saturday, April 14 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. First presented at the Tri-Stake seminar in the fall of 2011, Brenda Smith offers a substantially new/updated version for the Cloverdale Library. Welcome all keen gardeners!

The Cloverdale Garden Club meets the second Thursday of the month, September to June, at Clayton Community Hall, 18513 70 Avenue. Meetings run from 7 to 9 p.m. Our next meeting is April 12. Paul Bukema, a certified arborist, is speaking to us on pruning. In addition to monthly speakers, we have a monthly raffle, yearly bus trip and a plant sale in May. Drop in fee $3. Seedy Saturday

Get a great start on this year's garden at the Stewart Farm's annual seed and plant sale, and seed exchange. Purchase heritage vegetable, flower and herb seeds, fruit trees and nursery plants. Master gardeners and B.C. Fruit Testers will be on site to answer your gardening questions. Saturday, April 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Drop in, all ages, by donations. Historic Stewart Farm is located at 13723 Crescent Road, Surrey.

 

Freemasonry Explained

An evening of explanation and discovery. Everything you always wanted to know about Freemasonry but were afraid to ask. The Cloverdale Freemasons host an open house April 14 at the Eureka Masonic Hall, 20701 Fraser Highway, Langley. Doors open at 7 p.m., meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. This is an evening designed to explain and enlighten family, friends and the general public about our fraternity. This is a rare opportunity for them to see a Lodge room, its basic form, and its officers in their regalia. Email guy@lordco.com for more information.

 

Mending Fences

Surrey Little Theatre presents the B.C. premiere of Mending Fences, a comedy by Norm Foster. Directed by Marko Hohlbein. Burnaby schools history project

A volunteer group is writing and compiling the history of Burnaby schools, from 1894 to the present. If you have a short narrative or photo of a school experience or memory, we'd love to hear from you: 100 words or less is fine. Please make your submission by May 31, 2012. Email to burnabyheritageschools@gmail.com. Target publication date is early next year. Proceeds from sales of this coffee table book will go to scholarships for Burnaby high school students.

 

School Program Volunteers Needed at Historic Stewart Farm

Are you interested in history? Do you like working with children? Historic Stewart Farm in South Surrey needs volunteers to lead programs for elementary students on Surrey’s history in a heritage farm setting. Full training provided. As seniors, entertaining our community and giving back is part of what we do.  We need some new blood in the group and Cloverdale is our base of operations. Give us a call at 604-613-3116 or drop in to the Cloverdale Legion any Monday at 12 noon and ask for Susie. Having fun is our priority, come see us and find out what we are all about. Our oldest member is 90 and trying for 100.

 

Heritage Garden Volunteers

Help visitors discover Surrey’s agricultural past when you become a volunteer in the Historic Stewart Farm’s heritage flower, herb and vegetable gardens. Heritage garden volunteers plant and care for the gardens organically, and save seed from these old varieties to share with the public. Volunteers must have good basic gardening knowledge. Oneness GoGos

The Oneness Gogos of White Rock/Surrey group is working under the auspices of the Stephen Lewis Foundation to support African grandmothers raising children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. We meet on the fourth Monday of the month upstairs at White Rock Library, 15342 Buena Vista Ave. Newcomers welcome. Our next meeting is Jan. 23, at 1 p.m. Guest speaker Susan Janetti, who plans to return to Zimbabwe February and will share her experiences working with communities. South Surrey Soul Sisters

The newly formed South Surrey Soul Sisters meet the third Thursday of the month. We are working, under the auspices of the Stephen Lewis Foundation to support the African grandmothers who are raising an estimated 14 million orphaned children. Silvertone singers

The Silvertone singers are a group of men and women 55 and older. We will reconvene on the second floor of the Cloverdale Recreation Centre Thursday, Sept. 8 at 1 p.m. Practices continue every Thursday from September to June. You may have already heard us sing as we perform in the community several times a year. Come on out and enjoy singing and socializing with a great group of people. Dance Lessons

Look good and feel confident on any dance floor, even if you've never danced before. Bring your feet and a desire to dance.

 

Bowl for the Animals

Mondays and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to midnight and Sundays from noon to 3 p.m. at the Xcalibur Bowling Centre are fundraiser bowling days/nights for the Campaigns Against the Cruelty to Animals.
