Celebrate Earth Day with the family at the Surrey Museum this weekend, when there's an all ages event that's also part of the city's Environmental Extravaganza.

Discovery Saturday: Earth Day runs from 1-4 p.m. April 20. Activities will focus on how families can be frugal and eco conscious.

Learn how to take leftover household materials and turn them into something fun and crafty with the "Two Uses" stations. Old CDs and DVDs can be turned into hovercrafts or rainbow fish. Make goggles or caterpillars out of empty egg cartons, and have fun playing recycled games like pop bottle bowling or tumbling can towers.

The City of Surrey's engineering team will be on site sharing information about the city's new Rethink Waste program, launched in October 2012 with the goal of diverting 70 per cent of regional waste from the landfill by 2015.

In the first three months of collection, Surrey's residential garbage tonnage dropped by 43 per cent, and the amount of organic waste being diverted went up by the same amount.

Wacky Dr. Recycle will be on hand from 2 to 4 p.m., showing kids how to take ordinary household items and use them for fun projects.

Visitors are also welcome to bring in old or broken electronics for safe recycling. The Electronic Recycling Association will have its truck on site. The non-profit society promotes the reuse and recycling of unwanted computers and related equipment, refurbishes unwanted electronics, and donates them to non-profit organizations.
