On Wednesday, Feb. 8, Don Christian Elementary hosted their first-ever ‘Aboriginal Day.’

Throughout the school day, First Nations cultural facilitators gave workshops and presentations on First Nations policing, residential schools, soapstone carving, storytelling, Coast Salish art, the seasons and environment, drumming and dancing.

Surrey RCMP Constable Troy Derrick, who works out of the South Surrey District Office in First Nations Policing, invited skateboarders Ryan Brynelson, Andy Anderson and Kevin Harris to make a much-loved presentation on skateboarding.

Principal Martin Bobik said Derrick’s message was about how skateboarding helped him through his difficult youth.

“He brought the message to be proud to be aboriginal and that your attitude and effort is what really matter,” said Bobik.

The presentation was certainly very popular with the audience. The stunts had students leaping to their feet.

In another room nearby, Ralph Leon, SD 36 cultural facilitator, spoke to Mrs. Polok’s equally engaged Grade two class about the seasons as snow fell outside the classroom window.

“The overall response, both from students and staff, was very positive. Everyone enjoyed the variety of presentations, whether informational, hands on activities, or entertainment.”

Bobik said the school hopes to host another Aboriginal Day again next year.
