A day for Asian heritage

Surrey Museum hosts crafts, music, dance and cultural offerings on Saturday afternoon.

In celebration of Asian Heritage Month, the Surrey Museum is hosting Asian Heritage Day on May 26 from 1-3 p.m.

Try out crafts such as origami, enjoy dance and music performances from China, Korea and Sri Lanka, discover animals unique to Asia through crafts, try their hand at Taiwanese paper “Lego” and watch films in the Museum’s theatre.

Meet author Rebecca Kool, who wrote the children’s book, Fly Catcher Boy – written on kamishibai story cards, featuring Japanese text on one side and an English translation on the other.

Returning to the event this year is a unique Asian-themed green idea: a Japanese gift wrapping demonstration called furoshiki that teaches visitors how to quickly wrap presents without paper, tape or scissors.

Hop Frog Pond owner Doris Jetz will teach drop-in visitors an extremely simple and fast way to wrap gifts in cloth.

The event is drop-in, with admission by donation. The Surrey Museum is located at 17710 56A Ave. For more information, visit www.surrey.ca/heritage.
