The men’s and women’s soccer teams at Kwantlen Polytechnic University both qualified for the provincials after each split a pair of games on the weekend.

The Kwantlen Eagles women started with a loss to the Langara Falcons Saturday. Langara opened the scoring, but Kwantlen fought back with a goal by Shanay Sangha, leaving the teams tied at the half. But the Falcons scored at the 88-minute mark of the second and secured the 2-1 win.

Needing only one point to clinch second spot in group A of the Pacwest conference, Kwantlen came out with purpose against the Quest Kermodes the following day. A free kick from rookie midfielder Janessa Moore ricocheted off the bar directly to Sangha who headed in her league-leading 11th goal of the season to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. The goal was enough for the win as Quest never made it past the Kwantlen defence and goalie Melina Gomez recorded her sixth shutout of the season.

In men’s play, the Eagles took the lead against the Langara Falcons Saturday at the 27-minute mark when Marcos Teodoro Da Silva found the net. The goal was all Kwantlen needed as the Falcons were fended off for the rest of the match and goalkeeper Tom Johnston preserved the shutout. As with the women, the win secure the men’s squad a spot at this Pacwest Provincial Championships – the first time they’ve done so since the 2007 season.

Sunday’s game against Quest didn’t go as well for the Kwantlen men, as they were unable to capitalize on any chances and lost 2-0.

The Eagles women finished the season second in the standings with a 7-0-5 record, while the men also finished second with a record of 4-3-5. Both will play at the provincials in Kelowna beginning tomorrow (Friday). Kwantlen’s women open the tournament against Vancouver Island University at 10:30 a.m., while the men face UBC Okanagan at 3:30 p.m.
