PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS GET UNDERWAY

Kelowna’s Kelly Scott will be there to defend her provincial title when the 2011 edition of the Scotties B.C. women's curling championship gets underway in Cloverdale next week.

The Scotties competition will begin Monday at noon with the first of nine draws. The second goes later in the day at 7:30 p.m.

Joining the Scott rink for the Jan. 17 to 23 event will be former champion Kelly Law of Royal City, Richmond’s Kirsty Lewis, Jen Fewster and Patti Knezevic of Prince George, Duncan’s Rosalyn Craig, Jill Winters from Nelson, Royal City’s Adina Tasaka, Karla Thompson from Kamloops, and Nanaimo’s Nicole Backe.

Draws will be at noon and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with the ninth and final draw at 9:30 a.m. Friday. The top four teams will advance to the weekend’s playoffs.

Seven of the 10 competing teams qualified for last year’s Scotties tournament in Penticton.

HOLY WINS

The Holy Cross Crusaders beat the Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers to win the all-Surrey Senior Girls high school basketball tournament last weekend.

Holy Cross topped the tournament hosts 79-42 Jan. 8.

It was the first time Lord Tweedsmuir advanced to the tournament final of the annual Surrey Fire Fighters Classic.

Cara Bagry of Lord Tweedsmuir won the Most Inspirational Player honour, while Jasmine Sidhu of Panorama Ridge was the three-point shooting champion.
