Former Surrey Eagles captain Tyler Morley (centre) is among 59 'long list' nominees for the NCAA's Hobey Baker Award.

A former Surrey Eagle is on the NCAA’s list of players who will vie for the Hobey Baker Award, given annually to the best college hockey player in the United States.

The NCAA’s ‘long list’ of 59 players was released Jan. 7, and includes former Eagles’ captain Tyler Morley, who now plays at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks.

In total, 13 former BC Hockey Leagues are on the list.

Morley, who played for the Eagles from 2008-2012, is in his third season at Alaska-Fairbanks. This year, he has six goals and 14 assists in 18 games.

Later this season, the long list will be shortened, and from there, three finalists for the award will be announced. The winner will be named during the NCAA’s Frozen Four championship, which is April 9-11 in Boston.

Last year’s Hobey Baker Award winner, Johnny Gaudreau, is currently in his rookie season with the NHL’s Calgary Flames.
