Cloverdale’s Bertsch to play for SFU

Former Coquitlam Express to join collegiate team

After three years in the B.C. Hockey League, Cloverdale Minor Hockey alumnus Cam Bertsch will join Simon Fraser University for the 2017-18 B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League season.

Bertsch, 20, scored a dozen goals in 102 BCHL games with the Coquitlam Express. He also played six games with the Langley Rivermen as a 17-year-old in the 2013-14 season.

Last season, he netted five goals and added four assists in 23 games before an injury ended his season.

“His speed and offensive ability will be an asset for us, and he’ll fit into our system very well,” said SFU head coach Mark Coletta, who is looking for character in recruits for next season.

“Cam is a great kid, and we put a premium on bringing in players like him because that’s the best way to build a championship team.”

Barry Wolff, head coach of the Express, said Bartsch is a good addition to the SFU squad.

“He’s a really great guy off the ice, he’s a leader, and despite the injuries he faced last season, he did everything he could to be there for his teammates all year long.”
