SURREY — A mother and her daughter are lucky to be alive after a monkey tree fell on their car, in their driveway, in the 15000-block of 86th Avenue.
Surrey Fire Battalion Chief Gary Mcharg said firefighters had to remove a car door to get at the mother and her five-year-old daughter, who were trapped inside the four-door Toyota sedan.

The tree, which Mcharg said is about 20-inches thick, landed in between the two.
“A foot forward, a foot back, we’d probably be talking about a fatality.”

He said the mother is “probably” going to be sore in the morning. As for the girl, who was in the backseat, “The tree was against her face.”
But neither sustained any significant injury, he said.
“They were very lucky,” Mcharg said. The child was taken to hospital to make certain she’s OK.

It happened at about 4 p.m.
Mcharg said the gusts that brought the tree down has fire crews attending calls all over the city.
“It’s going to be a busy night,” he said.
In October, Shakir Salaam died after a tree fell on him at Clayton Heights Secondary School. At the time, a wind warning from Environment Canada was in effect.
