Surrey RCMP have identified a person of interest after a man was shot near Surrey’s Royal Heights Elementary school Thursday, Nov. 23.

“We have identified a person of interest and the investigation is ongoing. Charges have not been laid at this point,” Surrey RCMP Corporal Scotty Schumann told the Now-Leader on Tuesday (Nov. 28).

“This was an incident between two men known to each other and investigators believe was the result of a disagreement that got out of hand,” added Schumann. “Gangs or drugs are not a factor and public safety is not at risk. The victim’s injuries are not life threatening.”

Police say it was the 51st shots-fired incident in Surrey so far this year.

RCMP say a call came in about a shooting near the Surrey/Delta border at 96th Avenue and 116th Street at about 8:40 a.m. Thursday (Nov. 23).

The victim was a 33-year-old man from Surrey, police say.

The nearby Royal Heights Elementary school in Surrey was in lockout for 20 minutes after the morning incident, the Surrey School District told the Now-Leader.

“A lockout means the exterior doors are locked,” said Surrey school district spokesperson Doug Strachan.

Delta Police said Delview Secondary and Gibson Elementary were on a “brief lockdown as a precaution” but that has since been removed.

Investigators say they believe the shooting was targeted and say there was no risk to the public or staff and students at Royal Heights Elementary.

Meanwhile, a portion of Harvie Road was closed early Friday morning as Surrey RCMP responded to a shots-fired call in Port Kells.

Police say the road was closed from 80th to 88th Avenue after the call came in at 4:05 a.m. RCMP say “some evidence was retrieved” and the road was re-opened.
