VIDEO: North Delta students compete at the South Fraser Regional Science Fair

More than 110 students filled the gymnasium at Kwantlen’s Surrey campus on April 6 and 7 for the South Fraser Regional Science Fair.

The fair featured students in Grades 7 to 12 from 34 schools across Surrey and Delta.

Four North Delta schools had students at the fair: Devon Gardens Elementary, Gray Elementary, Sunshine Hills Elementary and Heath Elementary.

In order to make it to the regional fair, the student’s project had to be selected from the Surrey or Delta district fair.

“When I made it to regionals, I was ecstatic and happy,” said Avery Boyd, a Grade 7 student at Devon Gardens Elementary. Boyd’s projected looked at which materials would best insulate electromagnets.

“Since Grade 5 my goal was to make it to regionals,” he said. “If I could ever make it to the next step, that would be amazing.”

Eight students (three from Elgin Park Secondary, two from Hyland Elementary, two from the Surrey Academy of Innovative Learning and one from Semiahmoo Secondary) are moving on to the national science fair in Regina, which takes place May 14 to 20.
