Surrey fire crews tackle second suspicious fire

Surrey fire crews were called to knock down a suspicious fire at an abandoned home on Tuesday morning.

It's the second such fire at an abandoned home in the same area in less than a month.

Fire crews were called out to a blaze at 13683 97A Ave., just west of Surrey Memorial Hospital.

The home was abandoned, boarded up, and had no power leading to the building.

By the time fire crews arrived, the building was fully engulfed, and crews had to fight it defensively, making sure nearby houses did not catch fire as well.

It's the second home in the area that's caught fire under suspicious circumstances in less than a month.

On Sunday, July 13, crews attended a fire in the 6700-block of 137 Street.

The home was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived.

The residence was vacant, so no one was hurt.

Investigators are treating the fire as suspicious because no one was home when it started.

An adjoining home sustained some roof damage and the family living there has been relocated safely.

Fire crews are asking anyone who sees a vacated building to report it to fire on a non-emergency line or city bylaws, so that the structure can be rendered safe.

The investigation as to the cause of the fires continues.

In a separate incident, a brush fire on Tuesday morning caused a huge plume of smoke at King George Boulevard and 133 Street.

The cause of that fire is not known either.
