Will students in Surrey get a two-week spring break next year?

The Surrey School District is proposing the the former one-week break once again be extended to two – as has been done in the past several years.

It's proposed the extra week be added prior to the provincial spring break, so students would be off from March 12 to 23.

Another day off, the Monday after Remembrance Day, is also being suggested on top of the five other scheduled non-instructional (or Pro-D) days in 2011/2012.

Cutting the additional six instructional days from the school year saves Surrey nearly a million dollars.

District Supt. Mike McKay said many other Lower Mainland school districts are considering the same concept and are also looking at the same extra week so families won't all have different breaks.

School districts are required to adopt calendars for each of their schools on or before May 31 for the following school year. Trustees will discuss and vote on the proposal at the May 19 public board meeting.
