New Surrey schools named
The name of the new school planned for East Clayton will recognize the Katzie First Nation.
Katzie Elementary, one of three Surrey elementary schools expected to open within the next two years, is within Katzie traditional lands.
Surrey's Semiahmoo, Tamanawis and Kwantlen Park secondaries are also named for local First Nations.
“I thank the many people who took the time to send in their thoughtful suggestions for school names,” says board vice-chairperson Shawn Wilson, who chairs the board’s public relations committee, which is responsible for school naming.
The Surrey Board of Education also recently approved the names for Goldstone Park Elementary in South Newton and Sunnyside Elementary at 2828 159 Street, which is a replacement for the original Sunnyside Elementary school.
