EXHIBITIONS

LEGO: Myths & Muses

The Lost City of Atlantis has been found at the Surrey Museum! From the famed lighthouse at Alexandria to the Greek underworld, explore fascinating histories and mythologies of the Mediterranean as told with LEGO®. The LEGO® Club of Vancouver presents a world of gods and goddesses, heroes and monsters from ancient times, all created from our favourite block! On display June 30-September 15, 2012

 

PROGRAMS

Mythic Fridays

Discover the exciting history and captivating mythology of the Mediterranean as you create Greek, Roman and Egyptian gods and artifacts, with different “mythic” crafts each week. Be sure to include a visit to the Museum’s new “LEGO: Myths & Muses” exhibit! Fridays, July & August, 10:30 a.m. to noon, all ages, drop in, by donation.

 

Museum Summer Daycamps

Tech Time

Have fun exploring space, engineering and energy technology. Using recyclable and everyday items, children will build a model bridge, robot, mini rocket, wind turbine, catapult and other simple machines. Must pre-register at 604-592-6956.

Magical Mythical Monsters

Mythic monsters come to life and share how they challenged good in ancient Greece through stories, games, crafts and a tour of the LEGO Myths & Muses exhibit. Must pre-register at 604-592-6956. Saturday, August 18, 2-3:30 p.m., 1 session, $9.75, ages 6-10 years.

 

Pic-Knit

Join a summer gathering of knitters, crafters and suppliers at the Surrey Museum. Bring a picnic and your knitting and chat with knitting enthusiasts. Shop for your knitting stash with local vendors and meet angora bunnies and a mini-Jacob’s sheep. Learn about the BC Children’s Hospital “Click for Babies” program. Saturday, Aug. 4, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., all ages, by donation.

 

Knitted Felt

Students will quickly knit up a pair of slippers with large needles and thick yarn. Using soap, water and agitation, watch them transform into felt! Supply fee $15. Must pre-register at 604-592-6956. Saturday, Aug. 4, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., 1 session, $26.50, ages 16 and up.

 

Introduction to Nature Dyeing

Find out what nature provides to dye beautiful natural colours of yarn. Learn how to extract dyes from plants, mordant yarn, and make a dye bath to create eco-friendly and unique skeins of yarn to use for your projects. Supply fee $8. Must pre-register at 604-592-6956. Wednesday, Aug 8-Thursday, Aug 9, 2 to 4:30 p.m., 2 sessions, $30, ages 16 and up.

 

Kids Can Crochet

Crochet is quick to learn and a great skill to have! Have fun making pretty decorations and fashion accessories, like a key chain and spa cloth. Must pre-register at 604-592-6956. Tuesday, Aug 14-Thursday, Aug 16, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., three sessions, $39, ages 8-12 years.

 

Summer Spinning Workshop–Level 2

Spend three afternoons honing your spinning skills. Learn how to fine-tune your fibre preparation and work on your spinning skills. Supply fee $15. Must pre-register at 604-592-6956. Tuesday, Aug 14-Thursday, Aug 16, 2-4 p.m., 3 sessions, $45, ages 16 and up.

 

Weaving Webs, Spinning Spiders

Learn to weave and see real spinning wheels in action, as you hear the ancient Greek myth of the goddess Athena and her rival Arachne the Weaver. Take home your woven spider and a woolly sheep. Must pre-register at 604-592-6956.

VOLUNTEERS

Be a Heritage School Program Volunteer

Are you interested in history? Do you like working with children? Historic Stewart Farm, Surrey Museum and Surrey Archives need volunteers to lead programs for elementary students on Surrey’s history and First Nations culture. Full training provided. Fun at the Farm Daycamp Series

Spend a summer day on the farm doing things the old-fashioned way! Plan a party, go on a nature walk, be a river pirate, farm kid and more. There is a different theme every day! Must pre-register. Call 604-592-6956 for session info.

Dancin’ in the Barn

Swing your partner and Do-Si-Do! Come watch a lively demonstration of country dances in the heritage Pole Barn. Be entertained by the Frontier Tale Blazers as they recreate the lives of early Surrey settlers, explore the new barn displays, and enjoy cookies and lemonade and a tour of the 1894 farmhouse.

Saturday, August 11, noon to 4 p.m., Drop in, all ages, by donation.

 

Teddy Bear Picnic

It’s picnic time for teddy bears and the children they own! Bring your favourite bear or stuffed animal for a teddy bear hunt, a teddy bear judging contest, and ice cream and lemonade. Must pre-register at 604-592-6956. Saturday, August 25, 1:30 p.m.-3 p.m., 1 session $8 (3-5yrs).

Summer Family Drop-in

•World Travellers

Explore different countries around the world each day with the Surrey Museum team, as kids and families pretend to travel across the continents through crafts and games. Tuesdays & Thursdays, July 31 to Aug. 2. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., drop in, by donation, all ages.

 

•Pioneer Kids

Experience old-time days like pioneer kids did. Travel back in time with crafts and games as you learn about the days of pen and ink, lunch pails and wacky pioneer gadgets with Surrey Museum staff. Tuesdays & Thursdays, August 7 & 9, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., drop in, all ages.

 

World Explorer Day Camps Series

Join the Surrey Museum team to learn how early explorers braved the unknown as they mapped the world’s oceans, deserts, jungles, forests and polar regions. Travel to a different part of the world each day! Must pre-register at 604-592-6956. 5 sessions $132 (6-11yrs), Monday to Friday, Aug. 13-17, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Mother Goose & Me Series
