'Lego Movie' fan builds mini movie house in tribute
Lego aficionado Spencer Bourke, 12, (pictured) poses with one of his latest creations – a replica of Cloverdale’s iconic Clova Cinema, in honour of the single screen’s current offering, the animated comedy, The Lego Movie.
Bourke made the miniature movie house after school one day at his grandma’s home after she announced she was taking her grand kids to see the movie that night.
While checking the movie listings, she noticed the Clova’s current “Special People” discount asked patrons to bring in a Clova Cinema made out of Lego. She suggested he give the assignment a try, using her cache of Lego pieces.
“I showed him a little tiny picture [of the Clova] on my computer,” his grandma Diane Ferris told The Reporter, explaining how the boy proceeded to work from memory, without a visual aid. He only came upstairs for another peek once before completing his building project, a perfect replica in miniature, complete with a majestic marquee, box office, and other architectural details, including several rows of theatre seats.
When asked if he works in the Lego medium frequently, Spencer replied with an emphatic, “Yes!”
It turns out the Hillcrest Elementary student has got his own collection of Lego at home and works with it “almost all the time,” preferring it to more contemporary, electronic pastimes.
In honour of the Lego Movie, the Clova Cinema teamed up with Bricks 4 Kids, a Surrey program that teaches kids science, technology, engineering, and math using Lego. The program offers birthday parties, after school classes and camps. Bricks 4 Kids set up a table with crafts and information before several weekend screenings earlier this month.
The movie is getting rave reviews, including from Bourke and his sister, who hope to see it again if they get the chance.
The Lego Movie is playing nightly to Feb. 27. The original, computer animated story follows Emmet, a Lego mini figure who is mistakenly identified as the most important person in the world. featuring voices of actors Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Morgan Freeman, Elizabeth Banks, and Will Arnett.
