The Clova Cinema in Cloverdale is keeping with a favourite local Christmas tradition.

Friday, Dec. 16, the family-owned and operated theatre presents its 8th annual after school screening of The Polar Express.

The 2004 animated movie is directed by Robert Zemekis and features the voice of Tom Hanks.

It tells the story of how a boy's faith is rewarded one Christmas Eve when a stream train pulls up outside his house and takes him on a mysterious, thrilling journey to the North Pole – home of Santa's Workshop.

It's adapted from an illustrated children's book by Chris Van Allsburg. It's simply breathtaking on the big screen, like a storybook brought to life.

The traditional screening always takes place on the last day of school before Christmas break.

Egg nog is $1. There will be Christmas goodies, and admission is by donation. There's a $5 minimum, with proceeds going to the Surrey Food Bank.

The movie starts at 4 p.m., Friday, Dec. 16.
