Celebrated local competition barbecue team House of Q is headed to the world series of barbecue this week.

Both Brian Misko and his competition team partner and wife Corinne are making the 7,000-km trek to Kansas City for the Oct. 4-7 event, opting to drive their gear and kitchen all that way.

The American Royal Association's 33rd annual event is the largest barbecue contest in the world, attracting top teams from across the continent.

The team has been to a few U.S. competitions before, but Brian says this one's special. Many top-ranked barbecue teams compete at the association's events because they're considered the season finale of the barbecue circuit.

"We've got a great cook plan and we're ready to see how we stand up to the best on the continent," he said.

The event includes two separate competitions. House of Q is entered in the first, an invitational featuring about 135 teams. The other is an open competition that will see 545 teams vying for $10,000 in prizes.

"Please buy some sauce," reads a short statement on the House of Q website. "We need gas money!!"

Misko quit his software job two years ago to focus on professional barbecuing.

House of Q sells a line of barbecue sauces and spices.
