Residents of Surrey’s Heritage Woods neighbourhood got to know each other a little better this month, through a city-sponsored block party.

“The block party provided a great opportunity for neighbours to get out and meet one another and was a great way to put names to familiar and unfamiliar faces,” David Zarchikoff, one of the organizers, told Peace Arch News by email.

“Speaking with some neighbours who have been living in the neighbourhood for over 30 years, they remember having block parties 10-15 years ago. It’s great to re-visit an old neighbourhood tradition and bring it back; the neighbourhood really embraced it.”

Heritage Woods is located near King George Boulevard and 64 Avenue. More than 50 people turned out for the block party.

Zarchikoff said the event benefited from a Neighbourhood Enhancement Grant, and he encouraged other neighbourhoods to consider organizing their own event.

There are two grants available: up to $1,000 for projects that support community activism and celebration, and up to $3,000 for projects such as a neighbourhood garden, cleaning up a vacant property or creating a neighbourhood entrance feature.
