'YES' youths launch winter coat drive
The threat of snow and more cold weather has inspired a local youth group to hold a winter coat drive.
Tomorrow (Dec. 20), the Surrey Cares Youth Empowering Team (YES) will be gathering coats at City Centre Library, a 10350 University Drive.
The team will be collection donations in the lobby from 5-8:30 p.m. They were also asking people to bring in donations last weekend.
The coats will be donated to a not-for-profit organization.
The YES team is a program operated by the Surrey Cares Foundation. Members are Grade 11 and 12 students from Enver Creek, Queen Elizabeth and Kwantlen Park secondary schools. They met twice a month at Surrey's City Centre Library.
The youth team is relatively new, and it's unique because the group members "lead themselves," said Michael Chang, the group's adult advisor, urging Surrey residents to go through their closets for any suitable donations of proper winter clothing, such as coats, hats, and gloves.
They decided to hold a last-minute coat drive to gather as many coats as possible for people who may need one, he said.
"The main reason the youth want to carry this out is because they recognize that there are people in our community who do not have winter wear, and it is absolutely terrible in minus-to-freezing weather conditions."
