An Introduction to Family History
Saturday, Jan 12, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Charge: $10. If you want to trace your family history but don’t know where to start, this is the place. Find out what’s available and where, how to document what you find, and most importantly, pick up some tips and tricks unique to genealogy research.
Start Searching Your Family History – a Beginners’ Workshop in 5 Lessons
Saturdays, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Jan 19, Feb 2, 16, March 2, 16. This series of five 3-hour classes, developed by writer and researcher Brenda Smith, addresses each beginning family history researcher’s need for guidance in embarking on a very personal journey. Working with their own materials, and supporting each other, learners will discover their particular motives and set goals for their research, organize and evaluate their data, and plan the first stage of their individual programs. Participants must be able to commit to attending all five sessions. Charge: $100 for the series.
Start Writing Your Family History – a Communications Workshop in 5 Lessons
Saturdays, 1:30 – 4:30 p.m., Jan 19, Feb 2, 16, March 2, 16. This series also consists of five 3-hour classes, and addresses the researcher’s need to report and publish findings. Working with their own materials, and supporting each other, learners discover how to move from the gathering of information to creating a publishable product. Participants must be able to commit to attending all five sessions. Charge: $100 for the series.
NEW – Autosomal DNA – Genealogy Testing that Delivers!
Sat. March 9, 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. Charge: $10
Until recently, genealogy testing for DNA has been restricted to direct maternal lines (MtDNA) or paternal lines (Y-DNA). But autosomal testing as its offered today can deliver results across all family lines in more meaningful time frames. Come and find out how it works and learn about what it might do for you. This session will include a refresher on all DNA testing options for Genealogy.
NEW – A la Carte: Using Maps in Family History
Sat. April 6, 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Charge: $10
Explore how maps can aid the researcher to locate, track and record our ancestors’ paths of migration. Follow the case study maps to see how presenter Brenda Smith’s grandparents and great grandparents trekked across the world to arrive in the Peace River Country of northern British Columbia in 1930.
NEW – Tracing your English Ancestors from Canada
Sat. May 4, 11 am-12:30 pm. Charge: $10
How do you trace ancestors in England from thousands of miles away in Canada? Presenter Susan Snalam will demonstrate websites (some free/some pay) along with other local resources (including Findmypast) available to genealogists who live in the Lower Mainland.
